Dental sealant is a thin, plastic covering painted on the biting surfaces of teeth – for the most part the back teeth (the premolars and molars) – to forestall tooth rot. The sealant rapidly bonds to the teeth, setting a defensive shield over the enamel of each tooth. Sealants are used primarily on children and teenagers to protect their teeth against decay.
