Teeth damaged to greatly to be repaired with a standard filling, an inlay and onlay restorations are an option. These are indirect restorations, meaning that they are made outside the mouth, sometimes with dental impressions of the prepared tooth. An inlay repairs between cusps (raised point on surface) of a tooth while an onlay is mostly larger and covers several teeth including the cusp area. Like fillings, these restorations can be made of a variety of materials like porcelain or composite resin. Inlays and onlays are treatment options which are more conservative than a crown, but often stronger and longer lasting than a filling.
